Imperial LAFCO is responsible for coordinating logical and timely changes in local governmental boundaries and conducting special studies that review ways to reorganize, simplify and streamline governmental structure. In addition, LAFCO prepares a Sphere of Influence for each city and special district in the county. The LAFCO’s efforts are directed to seeing that services are provided efficiently and economically while protecting agricultural and open-space lands.
In regards to LAFCO’s history with the Niland Sanitary District, please read the following information:
- LAFCO attempted to work with the Niland Sanitary District to achieve a positive outcome.
- However after two attempts to complete a mandatory rate increase to achieve financial solvency, and numerous efforts to have the funding agencies maintain funding for the necessary improvements, Imperial LAFCO felt they had no alternative but to order that the Niland Sanitary District be dissolved and a successor agency be created to operate the sewer system.
- At this point, leaving the Niland Sanitary District in place, even with a new Board is not an option.
- Without a rate increase, no one, not even the County, can operate the system in compliance, so the residents need to understand that if service is to continue a rate increase is mandatory.
